Journal #9

My book was Ophelia Speaks & it was a perfect "coming of age" theme. The book talked about adolescent girls going through the tough situations life throws at them. Girls in Ophelia Speaks come from a troubled past and a past they have learned & grown from. Rape, drugs, suicide, eating diorders, etc., have become the bumps and hills of a teenagers life. This book shows "coming of age" because these girls have experienced things and grew up from it. They are people who used their past to become the women they are today. They grew to be strong, understanding, and independent women. Yet, they will never forget their past.
An example from the reading is the part on Self-Inflicted Wounds. A anonymous writer wrote Insomnia which was about her struggle going through self-destruction and how she is now warning other students or teens to not go that path. To her, it was a path of lonliness & sadness.
